Who is liable for damage to a rented home?

The landlord who hired the unbonded construction company or the construction company themselves? We had some roof damage at our complex. No leaking or anything- mainly cosmetic. Then, the construction company came and "fixed" the roof and early in the AM our ceilings started crashing down. No one was physically injured. But it took three weeks for them to replace ceilings and carpets. While they were working, however, they took food and beverages from our cabinets and fridge. They used our furniture as step stools and got paint and drywall crud on everything. They broke lamps and took our personal step ladder and shop broom. Everything is fairly minor, but my children are still freaked out. What are we supposed to do? The landlord won't help and the construction company will not return phone calls. Please help!
